Metallic Inks for Tower Coating Unit
Metallic Inks for Tower Coating Unit is part of an offset press and is usually the last unit. Some presses have a front-end coating unit plus one coating unit at the end. There is equipment in the market with two coater units at the end.
Essentially, the coater unit is a Flexo Unit on an Offset press. This unit is for printing water based or UV curing coatings to protect the print and provide high gloss aesthetics.
A special application is when metallic Flexo inks are printed in a tower coater unit.
What types of products (prints) are made using Coating Unit?
Usually everything, where ECKART offers solutions for tower coater units is printed Offset Sheetfed or Offset UV. The substrates are usually paper or carton board.

How are ECKART Inks for Coating Unit superior to alternative technologies?
With metallic coater unit, inks can be printed at the spot where the design needs metallic effects. This is an advantage over metalized board.
Also, metallic inks for Tower Coater units can be formulated with a broader variety of pigments. Therefore, the brilliance is much higher compared to metallic Offset inks.
What is the Coating Unit process?
Coating unit is usually used to print overprint varnishes to protect the print. Metallic effects printed in a coater unit are much more brilliant compared to metallic Offset effects. That’s why converters with more than one coating unit use metallic effects or pearlescent effects in an extra coater unit.
How does Coating Unit printing differ from Flexo?
Flexo printing machines have speeds up to 150 m/min – 400 m/min. This is much faster than sheetfed offset machines.
ECKART offers Topstar Aqua, which specifically formulated for the use in a tower coater. This specialty ink can be printed at 12,000 B/min.
How are ECKART Inks used in the process?
Single component water based inks from ECKART arrive with a supply viscosity. The end user dilutes the ink with either water or propylene glycole (a retarder to slower the drying) to print viscosity.
Single component UV curing inks from ECKART arrive ready to use.
