Why is the SSPC 2019, Coatings+ important?

SSPC 2019, or Coatings+ is important because of the diversity of those that attend. SSPC 2019 expects over 150 exhibitors at this years Coatings+. This gathering includes professionals from many backgrounds including scientists, researchers, engineers and technicians.

This is more than a social event. It is rich with idea-sharing. In addition to the many exhibitors, there are a number educational opportunities. This event attracts speakers and presenters from around the globe that come to share their knowledge in speeches, training sessions and seminars.

Why SSPC 2019, Coatings+ is important to ECKART.

ECKART is a global manufacturer of metallic pigments. The SSPC 2019, Coatings+ gives us an opportunity to discuss our functional pigments. While ECKART offers thousands of pigment variations, our line of Zinc Flake pigments truly contribute to the corrosion community.

What makes Zinc Flake so special?

SSPC 2019, Coatings+ is the perfect place for ECKART to talk about how great Zinc Flake is. Zinc Flake is used in corrosion preventative coating applications to protect small articles, such as nuts and bolts, using a process called Dip Spin. However, it is Zinc Flake’s use in other markets that needs to be promoted.

Many coatings manufacturers use Zinc Dust as a pigment that offers cathodic protection. Zinc Flake is able to provide protection while only using 33% of the Zinc Volume. This not only means less weight and stress for the system, but also great ecological benefits with reduced mining.

Zinc Flake and Paint 20.

Architects and design engineers are not coatings experts, so they look to other organizations to help identify standards and systems that will function as needed.

The result is an abundance of specifications qualifying only products that satisfy SSPC Paint 20, which only calls out high zinc-load products; Zinc Rich Coatings.  Because products carrying Zinc Flake carry much less zinc, they do not meet the criteria.

Alternatively, there is SSPC Paint 29. Paint 29 is a performance specification. However, Paint 29 still calls out a zinc load percentage. This leaves Zinc Flake in a positon where even though it’s performance meets the standard, it’s volume does not. Many people agree the zinc load volume is irrelevant and the focus should be corrosion prevention performance.

What is ECKART’s goal?

ECKART’s objective is to visit events such as SSPC 2019, Coatings+ to continue the conversation about Zinc Flake. The benefits of Zinc Flake are undoubtedly worth considering for any project that demands superior corrosion resistance.

Corrosion Protection Systems based on Lamellar Zinc Pigments

The anticorrosion properties of zinc have been well-known for decades. Product development of a unique zinc flakes morphology permitted to contemplate improved performances of zinc rich primers to meet the increasingly stringent requirements of modern high-quality corrosion protection.

The mechanism of the zinc pigment as a sacrificial electrode is only effective by establishing contact between the zinc particles and the iron substrate. However, the construction of a protective barrier layer is also important in addition to the cathodic protection. Taking these factors into account and particularly considering the different geometrical structures. Comparing a zinc dust rich with a zinc lamellar primer: the lamellar structure of zinc flakes with correspondingly higher binder is decisive for formulations with lower pigment concentration by volume (PVC) offering comparable or superior corrosion protection properties, with benefits in application (brushing , air and airless spraying , dipping and rolling) and coating properties.

A comparative performances study against corrosion of three coating systems, each of them including a zinc rich epoxy primer based on spherical (dust), lamellar (flake) and a mixture of lamellar and spherical morphologies was conducted using the American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM) and the Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) testing protocol. Results indicate a better zinc-rich paint system when using lamellar zinc for a category of C5-M exposure.

Corrosion protection systems with lamellar zinc pigments are entirely comparable, by our testing for protective action, with the so-called zinc rich primers, since they exhibit extraordinary advantages.
